OVER 400 OXYGEN DEPLETED “DEAD ZONES” PLAGUE WORLD’S OCEANS

dead_zone_-_sediment.jpgFertilizer runoff, fossil fuel burning, sewage and pollution-fed algae, are among the items being blamed for depleting ocean oxygen, killing sea life and creating over 400 worldwide “Dead Zones”, covering an area of 95,000 square miles, according to researchers writing in the latest edition of Science.

Hypoxia, as the condition is known, is not a new phenomenon, but as the number of “Dead Zones” has doubled each decade since the 1960’s, it is one that requires immediate attention. Failure to do so, experts tell us, could lead to a day in the not too distant future when man is no longer able to extract enough fish, shrimps, crabs and other sea life from the oceans to feed himself.

The newest “Dead Zones” are being found in the Southern Hemisphere in South America, Africa, and parts of Asia, according to researchers.

Closer to home, the largest U.S. dead zone is at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which at latest count covers some 8,000 square miles. Also threatened is Washington State’s Samish Bay and Yaquina Bay in Oregon.

HOW TO SAFELY HANDLE COMPACT FLOURESCENT LIGHTS (CFL’S)

Posted in Alternative Energy, Cool Products, Health Watch, News Brief, Toxin Alert! on August 6th, 2008

BECAUSE CFL’S CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF MERCURY, THE EPA HAS ESTABLISHED GUIDELINES TO OBSERVE WHEN HANDLING, DISPOSING OF, OR CLEANING UP BROKEN CFL’S

250px-compact-flourescent-bulb2.jpg As more and more of us convert out incandescent home lighting to the new soft light compact fluorescent lights, it is important to remember that these odd looking bulbs contain small amounts of mercury.

For that reason the EPA has developed guidelines to observe when handling, disposing of, or cleaning up broken CFL’s.

We here at Greenourscene.com urge you to take a moment and observe the best ways to handle CFL’s.

-Denis

INSTALLING CFL’S

Be careful when removing the bulb from its packaging, installing it, or replacing it.

Always screw and unscrew the light bulb by its base (not the glass), and NEVER forcefully twist the CFL into a light socket.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN A CFL WEARS OUT?

PROPER DISPOSAL: Contact your area recycling company to see if they have a program for disposing of worn out or broken CFL’s. If the answer is no, or you are unsure of who to contact, go to www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling or ww.earth911.org to identify local recycling options.

NOTE! Some areas permit you to put used or broken CFLs in the garbage. If this applies to your area seal the bulb in two plastic bags and put it into the outside trash, or other protected outside location, for the next normal trash collection.

It is important that you NEVER send a fluorescent light bulb or any other product containing mercury to an incinerator.

WHAT IS THE SAFEST WAY TO CLEAN UP A BROKEN CFL?

BEFORE CLEAN-UP:

Air Out the Room – Have people and pets leave the room, and don’t let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.

Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.

CLEAN-UP STEPS FOR HARD SURFACES

Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with a metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.

Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass pieces and powder.

Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.

Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.

CLEAN-UP STEPS FOR CARPETING OR RUG:

Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.

Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.

If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.

Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag

CLEAN-UP STEPS FOR CLOTHING, BEDDING, ETC.:

If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.

You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.

If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.

DISPOSAL OF CLEAN-UP MATERIALS

Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup.

Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.

Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.

FUTURE CLEANING OF CARPETING OR RUG

Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming

The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.

Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes

HEALTH WATCH! ASTHMA AND OTHER BREATHING DISORDERS PLAGUE KATRINA SURVIVORS

Posted in Administrative Arrogance, Corporate Polluters, Corporate Responsibility, Eco Thugs, Government Shenanigans, Health Watch, News Brief, Toxic Living, Toxin Alert! on May 27th, 2008

FORMALDEHYDE FUMES IN LEVELS UP TO FIVE TIMES ABOVE THAT WHICH IS CONSIDERED SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, DETECTED IN MANY OF THE 143,000 FEMA TRAILERS SENT TO THE GULF COAST
fematrailer.jpgAs if the trauma, indignity and economic hard times that the residents of New Orleans have suffered since Hurricane Katrina was not sufficient aggravation for one lifetime, many area residents are now being diagnosed with cases of asthma and other breathing disorders, at numbers and levels higher than what is considered normal for the area.

According to an AP wire story published earlier today, formaldehyde fumes, many times at levels up to five times above what is considered safe for humans to breathe, have, as early as 2006, been found to be present in many of the 143,000 trailers sent to the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. But for some reason, this news is only now being shared with those affected.

This is particularly upsetting because it is just the latest example of what can happen to innocent people when the government to whom they turn for aid in emergencies such as this – and who is supposed to be looking our for their well-being – doesn’t care enough to inspect the trailers before declaring them safe for habitation

But then, much of the devastation present in New Orleans and the surrounding areas could have been avoided if only the Bush administration had heeded the warnings of the Army Corps of Engineers and fortified New Orleans’s levees when the need first became apparent.

But then, this is the Bush administration we are talking about and the money that should have been used to protect the citizens of New Orleans apparently was needed elsewhere, perhaps to finance tax breaks for the wealthy or maybe it was to continue Mr. Bush’s ridiculous little war.

But this is just my opinion, What do you think? Please share in the comments section.

2007-10-05-meat_patties1.jpg

From the another reason to become a vegetarian file, please be advised that JSM Meat Holdings Company of Chicago is recalling certain beef products allegedly because of risk of E. coli contamination. The good news, as if there is ever any in these situations , is that, according to the USDA, there have been no reported illnesses connected with this latest recall. For all of our internal organs, let’s hope it stays that way.

Products to look out for include: 30-pound, 60-pound boxes, combo boxes, or 47-gallon gallon barrels of “MORREALE MEAT” beef products labeled as “Boneless Chucks,” “Boneless Clods,” “Flat Rounds,” “Gooseneck Rounds,” “Knuckle,” “Heel Meat,” “Scotties,” “Trimmings 50,” “Trimmings 60,” “Trimmings 65,” “Trimmings 70,” “Trimmings 75,” “Trimmings 80,” “Trimmings 85,” or “Trimmings 90.”

The recalled beef products bear the establishment number “EST. 6872″ inside the USDA mark of inspection and were reportedly sent to companies in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

If you think that you may have purchased one of the affected products contact JSM Meat Holdings Company at 312-421-3664.

NEWS WATCH! BUSH EASES CLEAN-AIR PROTECTIONS FOR NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDERNESS AREAS

THIS LATEST GIFT TO POLLUTERS WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO BUILD POLLUTING POWER PLANTS NEAR PROTECTED AREAS

coalfiredpowerplant.jpgThe administration’s war against clean air and water scored another victory today with the announcement that Corporate America’s man in the White House is putting the finishing touches on a plan, which would make it easier to build power plants near national parks and wilderness areas.

The new regulations, expected to be finalized this summer, rewrite a key provision of the Clean Air Act as it applies to “Class 1 areas,”, Beltway shorthand for these precious natural resources.

This initiative is the latest in a series of administration efforts to weaken air quality protections at national parks.

AP STUDY FINDS A VAST ARRAY OF LEGAL DRUGS IN THE DRINKING WATER SUPPLY

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Toxin Alert!, Water War on March 10th, 2008

DRUGS FOUND INCLUDE ANTIBIOTICS, ANTI-CONVULSANTS, MOOD STABILIZERS, SEX HORMONES AND A NUMBER OF OVER THE COUNTER REMEDYS

200px-stilles_mineralwasser1.jpgThe Associated Press has discovered that a vast array of drugs – including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas affecting as many as 41 million Americans – from Southern California to Northern New Jersey, from Detroit to Louisville, Ky.

The presence of so many prescription drugs – and over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen – in so much of our drinking water is heightening worries among scientists of long-term consequences to human health.

UN ESTIMATES: TOBACCO TO KILL 1 BILLION PEOPLE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Toxin Alert! on February 8th, 2008

URGES GOVERNMENTS TO BECOME SERIOUS ABOUT DISSUADING PEOPLE – ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND YOUNG PEOPLE – FROM SMOKING AND TO HELP THOSE WHO DO TO QUIT

cigtray4.jpegMore good news for the world’s smokers: The World Health Organization is predicting that 500 million of you, alive today, will die from nicotine related diseases before the end of this century, that is, unless you are successful in kicking the nicotine habit.

If it’s any comfort, you will not be alone shuffling off to that early grave. Per the UN agency, you will be joined by an additional 500 million souls, not yet born, unless the nations of the earth get serious about dealing with what can only be called, the smoking epidemic.

Not to sound like too much of a pessimist, but it would probably not be that wise to count on our government taking the suggested actions. The cigarette industry is far too entrenched and contributes to the standard of living of way – too – many Beltway insiders for there to be any significant enthusiasm about altering the status quo.

So, my friends, you are on your own. But what else is new?

DANGEROUS LEVELS OF MERCURY FOUND IN NYC TUNA SUSHI

Posted in Health Watch, Toxic Food, Toxin Alert! on January 23rd, 2008

LABORATORY TESTS FOUND SO MUCH MERCURY IN TUNA SUSHI FROM 20 MANHATTAN STORES AND RESTAURANTS THAT SIX PIECES A WEEK WOULD EXCEED THE LEVELS CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE BY THE EPA

tunasushi.jpegSushi from 5 of the 20 places had mercury levels so high that the Food and Drug Administration could take legal action to remove the fish from the market. The sushi was bought by The New York Times in October.

“No one should eat a meal of tuna with mercury levels like those found in the restaurant samples more than about once every three weeks,” said Dr. Michael Gochfeld, professor of environmental and occupational medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J.

Although the samples were gathered in New York City, experts believe similar results would be observed elsewhere.

CALIFORNIA OIL SPILL THREATENS THOUSANDS OF BIRDS AND MARINE ANIMALS

Posted in Corporate Polluters, Eco Thugs, News Brief, Toxin Alert! on November 9th, 2007

58,000-GALLON SPILL FOULS COASTLINE, CLOSES BEACHES, AND FORCES THE CANCELLATION OF NUMEROUS WEEKEND ACTIVITIES

oil_bird.jpg
For the life of me, I cannot imagine how, with all of the clearance for sea travel beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, that some incompetent fool could plow his fully loaded, South Korea bound oil tanker into one of the bridges support pilings.

This one definitely calls for an investigation to what could have caused this lapse. Not that anything will ultimately come of it as we have learned the hard way from the Exxon Valdez matter.

It is hard to believe that nearly twenty years have passed since another incompetent fool ran his tanker aground, this time in Alaska, and that Exxon has yet to make good on the damage that it’s spill created.

Come to think of it, in the day of four-dollar a gallon gas while the oil companies enjoy record profits, it is not that hard to believe after all.

-LIB

Assessment and recovery teams hit the skies, waters and beaches Friday trying to contain the damage from a 58,000-gallon oil spill that has stained some of Northern California’s coastline.

Oil skimmers, surveillance flights and shoreline cleanup teams continued to mop up the damage as questions persisted about why the Coast Guard took so long to report the scope of the spill.
