FOX & FRIENDS PROMOTES GLOBAL WARMING DENIERS

foxandfriends07.pngYou would think that in this day and age it is pretty much accepted fact that global warming is real and more than likely here to stay. So how then can Fox and its morning show, Fox and Friends, justify its endorsement of a so-called “Environmental Conference”, currently taking place in New York City, which among other things, alleges that Global Warming is bogus?

Can Roger Ailes and the wizards at Fox really believe that virtually all of the data collected to date by the crème of the world’s scientific community – data, which proves beyond a doubt the veracity of the Global Warming argument – is inaccurate?

Or is their endorsement of the Global Warming deniers more of a cynical last-ditch effort to provide cover for loyalist old- line corporations, organizations for which becoming environmentally compliant – if it is in fact possible – would require massive expenditures of time and money, than it is representative of any real belief system?

Hopefully, their support of the Global Warming deniers is just the boys and the girls at Fox’s way of showing their support for their and their boss, Rupert Murdock’s, friends in the corporate community, and not the result of the loss of any of their remaining sanity and reason. But then, you never really know.

The good news is that finally it appears that Corporate America has seen the writing on the wall and is in full panic mode with the realization that their days of unfettered, unregulated excess are over. The presidential election is upon us. America is demanding change, radical change from the ways and the days of the Bush administration. Respect for the environment, the giver of all life, is a large part of that change, something which many of these companies would like to postpone, if not derail entirely.

With a little luck, they will not get their way. Though I do not like to see anyone loose money, I am having a hard time getting worked up over the plight of these corporations. Had they begun the changes back when they should have, the cost to them would have been manageable. The fact that they didn’t is their and their stockholders problem.

PENDING PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATION WOULD ALLOW DOCTORS TO DENY ABORTIONS AND CONTRACEPTION ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS

Posted in News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on February 19th, 2008

BILL WOULD ABSOLVE MEDICAL CARE PROVIDERS OF LIABILITY IN CASES WHERE REPRODUCTIVE CARE WAS DENIED BASED ON A PRACTITIONER’S RELIGIOUS OR MORAL BELIEFS.

xin_54070416093561120577112.jpgPennsylvania Senate Bill 1255, aka the Conscientious Objection Act, is just the latest attempt by evangelical Christians to force their way of life on mainstream society. For that reason, it must be defeated.

The legislation in question would allow medical professions to withhold, with immunity, services including performing an abortion, artificial insemination, and prescribing birth control or emergency contraception. While there have been scattered instances, nationwide, of such services being denied in recent years, this is the first attempt to pass legislation granting immunity to those who refuse.

If the Pennsylvania doctors and other medical professionals feel so strongly about this issue, they should find work in circumstances where they are shielded from such requests rather than attempting to legislate their belief systems.

GLOBAL POLLUTERS MEET IN HAWAII TO DISCUSS CURBING CLIMATE CHANGE WITHOUT STALLING ECONOMIC GROWTH

Posted in News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on January 28th, 2008

THE GATHERING IS MEANT TO SPUR U.N. NEGOTIATIONS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE AGREEMENT BY 2009

airpollition1.jpgThis is the second time this group has convened — the first time was in Washington in September — and there has been some skepticism among environmentalists about the effectiveness of this process.

“The question back in September was, ‘Does the fact that they’re launching this process indicate some change in the position of this administration?”‘ said Angela Anderson of the non-partisan Pew Environment Group.

The answer, Anderson said in a telephone interview, is no: “There has been no change in position whatsoever in this White House. They were hoping to sell their position to the rest of the world and that’s not working.”

BUSH INSISTS KYOTO APPROACH ON CLIMATE IS “BAD POLICY”:

Posted in Corporate Greed, Eco Thugs, Government Shenanigans, News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on October 16th, 2007

CLAIMS HIS IDEA OF “ASPIRATIONAL” GOALS THAT INDIVIDUAL COUNTRIES SET ON THEIR OWN TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE IS WORKING

2007-10-11-confusedbush.jpgSure, believe this one and I have a slightly used Minneapolis airport public toilet that I can make you a hell of a deal on. Seriously now, doesn’t George Bush realize that he has absolutely no green cred to fall back on? None? Zero? Nada?

For once it would be nice to see the mainstream media call him on this, rather than merely parrot his lies and distortions. But I guess, given how deeply the modern media barons are beholden to this administration, this isn’t about to happen, at least not for the foreseeable future. In the interim, between now and when hell freezes over, it is up to you and I to do the media’s job in this matter.

It’s up to you and I to ask the tough questions, such as, “are we really supposed to believe that the greedy multinational corporations, so favored the present administration, care at all what effect their pillaging and plundering of the earth’s natural resources means to anything or anyone other it’s benefit to their bottom line? Are we supposed to suspend out disbelief long enough to even consider that he might know the extent of the devastation that their greed has cost the rest of us?

To attempt to have us believe otherwise is a complete fabrication of the truth, and those involved in this selling job should be held to answer for their involvement in this charade.

I am sure that when the Bush-Cheney administration is finally dissected, and that day will come, we will discover that the successes, which Mr. Bush references in the above caption, were achieved by changing the rules for how they kept score, and not by any tangible reductions.

Interim, there is little that we can do other than to scream the truth far and wide in the hope of converting the few who remain loyal to Mr. Bush and believe his bullshit.

Bush’s critique of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol came days after former Vice President Al Gore and the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change were awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to raise awareness about climate change.

The Nobel win for Gore, who helped negotiate Kyoto, prompted speculation over whether it would add to pressure on Bush to shift his approach on global warming and accept the kinds of mandatory caps that many European countries view as necessary to tackle the problem.

Soon after taking office in 2001, Bush rejected the Kyoto Protocol, which sets limits on industrial nations’ greenhouse gas emissions.

But he has said he wants play a significant role in helping to negotiate a successor to Kyoto, which runs out in 2012. Last month, the United States held a conference of major emitting countries on global warming.

CASH STRAPPED ADMINISTRATION DENIES INSURANCE FOR CHILDREN BUT FUNDS NATIONAL ABSTINENCE CAMPAIGN

Posted in Government Shenanigans, News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on October 8th, 2007

CAMPAIGN A KISS ON THE LIPS TO PLACATE RELIGIOUS LEADERS CUT LOOSE BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN RECENT MONTHS

abstinence.jpgEven with mountains of scientific evidence proving that abstinence campaigns do not work and are a waste of taxpayer money, the administration announced over the weekend that it is funding yet another television campaign in the hope of selling this psuedo-scientific sham to America’s teenagers. Luckily for America, most teenagers are not listening, and a large percentage of those that are, according to other data, have found workarounds that would make Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky proud.

So what is this all about then?

Why is the Bush administration so willing to siphon money from a budget already so cash- starved by the war and welfare for the wealthy that it could not underwrite insurance for uninsured children, to fund a campaign intended to sell something that does not work?

To understand the administration’s motives in this matter, it is important to look at the campaign for what it is and not for what it is intended to do. As I see it, this campaign is a way to channel federal dollars to loyal Christian grass-roots support groups upset in recent months that they and their issues have been pushed aside as Republicans, led by socially moderate Rudi Giuliani, attempt to retain the White House.

Nothing more, nothing less. The fundies are unhappy, and the most recent beneficiary of their largesse, one George W. Bush, is trying to prevent the loss of any more of his core. And with his recent 29% approval rating in the polls, his actions are timely to say the least.

Think Progress has the scoop and the video of the commerical.

NEW STUDY BRINGS CLARITY TO THE ABORTION ISSUE

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on August 16th, 2007

PROVES THAT WOMEN USING ABORTION PILLS SEEM TO FACE NO GREATER RISK OF TUBAL PREGNANCY OR MISCARRIAGE IN LATER PREGNANCIES THAN THOSE HAVING SURGICAL ABORTIONS

ru486protest.jpgThe anti-abortion movement was dealt another setback today with the results of a new US/Danish study, which proved for the record that women pursing medical abortions through the use of abortion pills are no more likely to develop complications, including tubular pregnancies and miscarriages during subsequent pregnancies, than those undergoing traditional surgical abortions.

This new evidence lays waste one of the anti-abortion advocates principle arguments against the pills, the most famous of which is RU-486, that use of the pill can potentially affect the viability of subsequent pregnancies.

Now the question is, will the results of this study, published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine, force the anti-abortion movement to abandon this fear tactic or will they show their traditional disdain for science and continue to spread their misinformation?

Now if I was a betting man….

-LIB

The federally funded research _ based on nearly 12,000 Danish women _ is considered the best study to date of the impact of this newer abortion method on subsequent pregnancies.

The vast majority of abortions are called surgical abortions, usually done by vacuuming an embryo or fetus out with a syringe or electric pump.

The U.S. and Danish researchers studied medical abortions. Generally, it involves a woman ending a pregnancy by taking one tablet of mifespristone _ formerly known as RU-486 _ followed by about four misoprostol pills a day or two later. The mifepristone destabilize the connecting tissue between an embryo and the uterus, and the misoprostol causes the uterus to expel the embryo.

GORE TAKES ON EXXONMOBIL

Posted in Corporate Greed, Corporate Polluters, Eco Thugs, Global Warming, Miscellaneous, Pseudoscientific Babble on August 9th, 2007

BLASTS OIL GIANT’S ATTEMPTS TO OBSCURE THE SCIENTIFIC CONSENSUS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING

AlGorerecent.jpgAl Gore is taking on ExxonMobil’s multi-million dollar backing of climate skeptics that the former vice president said were paid to obscure the scientific consensus about global warming.

It’s a familiar charge, and one that is well documented, but the same broadsides against climate science that were cooked up b y these experts for hire continue to appear all over the Web, in the editorials of some prominent newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and the Investors Business Daily and, no doubt before long, in the comments at the bottom of this story.

Skepticism is a fundamental part of science. The best scientists are most skeptical of their own results — trying, through the process of science, to test every possible theory that would disprove their hypothesis before they express confidence in its validity. In the case of climate science, the competing hypotheses have been tested again and again, and the theory — a stronger word in the world of science than in the popular mind — that has been supported again and again is that human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are the leading cause of global warming today, that the effects of global warming are beginning to emerge and that the future consequences are dire.

GLOBAL WARMING’S WELL FUNDED DENIERS

Posted in Corporate Greed, Corporate Polluters, Eco Thugs, Miscellaneous, Pseudoscientific Babble on August 5th, 2007

CONTRARIAN SCIENTISTS, FREE-MARKET THINK TANKS AND INDUSTRY BAND TOGETHER TO DENY THE TRUTH

enviroglobe1.jpgSen. Barbara Boxer had been chair of the Senate’s Environment Committee for less than a month when the verdict landed last February. “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal,” concluded a report by 600 scientists from governments, academia, green groups and businesses in 40 countries. Worse, there was now at least a 90 percent likelihood that the release of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels is causing longer droughts, more flood-causing downpours and worse heat waves, way up from earlier studies. Those who doubt the reality of human-caused climate change have spent decades disputing that. But Boxer figured that with “the overwhelming science out there, the deniers’ days were numbered.” As she left a meeting with the head of the international climate panel, however, a staffer had some news for her. A conservative think tank long funded by ExxonMobil, she told Boxer, had offered scientists $10,000 to write articles undercutting the new report and the computer-based climate models it is based on. “I realized,” says Boxer, “there was a movement behind this that just wasn’t giving up.”

If you think those who have long challenged the mainstream scientific findings about global warming recognize that the game is over, think again. Yes, 19 million people watched the “Live Earth” concerts last month, titans of corporate America are calling for laws mandating greenhouse cuts, “green” magazines fill newsstands, and the film based on Al Gore’s best-selling book, “An Inconvenient Truth,” won an Oscar. But outside Hollywood, Manhattan and other habitats of the chattering classes, the denial machine is running at full throttle—and continuing to shape both government policy and public opinion.

MORE BAD NEWS FOR ABSTINENCE-ONLY PROGRAMS

Posted in Government Shenanigans, Health Watch, News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on August 3rd, 2007

THE STUDY CONCLUDED THAT NONE OF THE ABSTINENCE-ONLY PROGRAMS HAD ANY IMPACT ON THE AGE AT WHICH INDIVIDUALS LOST THEIR VIRGINITY, WHETHER THEY HAD UNPROTECTED SEX, THE NUMBER OF SEXUAL PARTNERS, THE RATES OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES OR THE NUMBER OF PREGNANCIES.

250px-High_school_students2.jpg The much-touted Sex Abstinence-Only programs faced another setback today with the results of an Oxford University review of 13 US trials concluded that the programs do not stop risky sexual behavior, nor do they help in the prevention of unwanted pregnancy.

The study also concluded that none of the abstinence-only programs had an impact on the age at which individuals lost their virginity, whether they had unprotected sex, the number of sexual partners, the rates of sexually transmitted diseases or the number of pregnancies.

In commenting on the Oxford results, Genevieve Clark, of the Terrence Higgins Trust, noted the possibility for the abstinence-only programs to be harmful as they fail to provide a “safety net for those young people who do have a sexual relationship.”

It is unlikely that the Oxford findings will have much of an effect on current administration policy of funding abstinence-only programs as part of it’s overall war on sexual freedoms.

ACCORDING TO ROLLING STONE, WASHINGTON’S BRIGHT PROGNOSIS FOR THE FUTURE OF ETHANOL IS “NOT JUST HYPE — IT’S DANGEROUS, DELUSIONAL BULLSHIT”

Posted in Alternative Energy, Corporate Greed, Eco Thugs, Government Shenanigans, News Brief, Pseudoscientific Babble on July 31st, 2007

CORN BASED ETHANOL IS A GIFT TO AMD COMPLETE WITH A HEAPING PACKAGE OF SUBSIDIES

maize.jpgHIGHLIGHTS:

Ethanol doesn’t burn cleaner than gasoline. Nor is it cheaper.

Our current ethanol production represents only 3.5 percent of our gasoline consumption — yet it consumes twenty percent of the entire U.S. corn crop.

The increasing acreage devoted to corn for ethanol means less land for other staple crops, giving farmers in South America an incentive to carve fields out of tropical forests that help to cool the planet and stave off global warming.

Not all ethanol is created equal.

Ethanol made from sugar cane has an energy balance of 8-to-1 — that is, when you add up the fossil fuels used to irrigate, fertilize, grow, transport and refine sugar cane into ethanol, the energy output is eight times higher than the energy inputs.

Gasoline has an energy balance of 5-to-1.

Corn ethanol an energy balance of only 1.3-to-1 making it practically worthless as an energy source.
