HEALTH WATCH! ASTHMA AND OTHER BREATHING DISORDERS PLAGUE KATRINA SURVIVORS

FORMALDEHYDE FUMES IN LEVELS UP TO FIVE TIMES ABOVE THAT WHICH IS CONSIDERED SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION, DETECTED IN MANY OF THE 143,000 FEMA TRAILERS SENT TO THE GULF COAST
fematrailer.jpgAs if the trauma, indignity and economic hard times that the residents of New Orleans have suffered since Hurricane Katrina was not sufficient aggravation for one lifetime, many area residents are now being diagnosed with cases of asthma and other breathing disorders, at numbers and levels higher than what is considered normal for the area.

According to an AP wire story published earlier today, formaldehyde fumes, many times at levels up to five times above what is considered safe for humans to breathe, have, as early as 2006, been found to be present in many of the 143,000 trailers sent to the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. But for some reason, this news is only now being shared with those affected.

This is particularly upsetting because it is just the latest example of what can happen to innocent people when the government to whom they turn for aid in emergencies such as this – and who is supposed to be looking our for their well-being – doesn’t care enough to inspect the trailers before declaring them safe for habitation

But then, much of the devastation present in New Orleans and the surrounding areas could have been avoided if only the Bush administration had heeded the warnings of the Army Corps of Engineers and fortified New Orleans’s levees when the need first became apparent.

But then, this is the Bush administration we are talking about and the money that should have been used to protect the citizens of New Orleans apparently was needed elsewhere, perhaps to finance tax breaks for the wealthy or maybe it was to continue Mr. Bush’s ridiculous little war.

But this is just my opinion, What do you think? Please share in the comments section.

NEWS WATCH! BUSHIES TAILOR SCIENCE TO POLICY

NEARLY 900 EPA SCIENTISTS REPORT EXPERIENCING “SIGNIFICANT ADMINISTRATION MANIPULATION” OF THEIR FINDINGS

bush_dunce2.jpgNearly 900 of our nation’s best and brightest scientists and climatologists working for the Environmental Protection Agency have reported experiencing firsthand meddling by Bush administration political operatives as the Bush flunkies fought to make the scientist’s findings fit administration policy.

This is according to a report issued earlier today by the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit environmental organization.

While this latest data is not particularly surprising, the sad thing is that these findings are in keeping with what was found in other government agencies.

Per the report, nearly 900 of the aforementioned scientists claim to have “personally experienced at least one instance of political interference in the last five years”, while 394 scientists reported experiencing “frequent or occasional statements by EPA officials that misrepresent scientists’ findings.”

But the bad news does not end there. An additional fifth, or 285, reported “selective or incomplete use of their data to justify a ‘specific regulatory outcome’”.

As might be expected, an EPA spokesman, Jonathan Shradar, denied all allegations.

BUSH’S LATEST ENVIRONMENTAL NON-PROPOSAL ALLOWS CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS TO PEAK IN 2025

s-bush-and-the-bunny-large.jpgWith the release, yesterday, of the latest White House plan to stop the growth of global warming emissions, George Bush all but guaranteed his standing as the most anti-environmental president in US history.”

The administrations proposal, sketchy that it is, calls for letting U.S. carbon dioxide emissions peak in 2025, though Mr. Bush has proposed no specifics on how to do so.

The President was specific, however, in refusing to consider any new taxes, trade barriers, or plans to abandon nuclear power, saying that the coal-burning electric utilities — the biggest single source of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions — need to find new high-tech ways of trapping greenhouse gases.

Per da prez, “if we fully implement our strong new laws, adhere to the principles I’ve outlined, and adopt appropriate incentives, we will put America on an ambitious new track for greenhouse gas reductions,” he said, before adding, “we’re doing a lot to protect this environment.”

Now any even marginal student of environmental issues knows that the president has no plan, whatsoever, to implement conservation policy at this late hour in his presidency, and this entire discussion is just empty words intended to placate an ever more environmentally aware population.

From the day he took office, Mr. Bush and his administration have rejected any and all attempts to enact any serious legislation to curb carbon dioxide emissions, citing on the rare occasion that he deemed to explain his actions, his belief in the Market Economy and the ability of corporations to self regulate.

We all know what a lot of crap that that is!

Moreover, I am willing to go out and a limb and speculate here that we will not see any significant change in environmental policy until Barrack Obama is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

SIERRA CLUB WARNS THAT CALIFORNIA BOUND FEMA MOBILE HOMES COULD HAVE DANGEROUS LEVELS OF FORMALDEHYDE

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Toxic Living on November 8th, 2007

A KNOWN CARCINOGEN, FORMALDEHYDE CAN CAUSE AN ARRAY OF UPPER RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS, AND TRIGGER ASTHMA AND BREATHING PROBLEMS, PARTICULARLY IN THE ELDERLY AND YOUNG CHILDREN

fire.jpg FEMA claims that its mobile homes are safe, but concedes it has not tested these units, which were manufactured with materials similar to those in the toxic RV trailers.

But Sierra Club says random tests of FEMA mobile homes found at least three had formaldehyde levels over the Environmental Protection Agency limit of .10 parts per million.

Previous Sierra Club testing showed that 83 percent of FEMA homes tested in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama had levels of formaldehyde above the recommended limit.

Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical most often used for embalming, but it is also commonly used as a glue in building materials, like particle board for cabinets in mobile homes. It can “out-gas,” or leak into the air, under hot, humid conditions.

REPORT: CHILDREN THE MOST AT RISK FROM GLOBAL WARMING

Posted in Global Warming, Health Watch, Toxic Living on October 29th, 2007

AMONG HEALTH DANGERS ASSOCIATED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE THAT WOULD AFFECT CHILDREN ARE A PROJECTED INCREASE IN VECTOR-BORNE ILLNESSES, SUCH AS MALARIA, A GREATER INCIDENCE OF ASTHMA AND RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES; AND MORE HEAT-RELATED DEATHS

teletubby.jpgChildren are especially vulnerable to the adverse health effects of global warming, said a report released Monday. “Anticipated direct health consequences of climate change include injury and death from extreme weather events and natural disasters, increases in climate-sensitive infectious diseases, increases in air pollution-related illness, and more heat-related, potentially fatal, illness,” the report presented at the annual congress of the American Academy of Pediatrics said.

“Within all of these categories, children have increased vulnerability compared with other groups,” it said.

The authors urged pediatricians, especially in the United States, which they noted produces the most greenhouse emissions per capita of any country, to lead by example and run environment-friendly practices.

The report also warned of food shortages caused by unchecked global warming, and much-reduced water availability in regions including the US west coast, parts of which, in California, were ravaged by fire last week.

Food and water shortages could in turn lead to massive population movements, the report said.

TIME RUNNING OUT FOR POLITICAL LEADERS TO REACH ACCORD ON CURBING EMISSIONS

Posted in Global Warming, Health Watch, News Brief, Toxic Living on June 7th, 2007

HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF LIVELIHOODS WILL BE AFFECTED BY DECLINING SNOW AND ICE COVER, UN REPORT WARNS

globalwarming.jpgThe risks facing people included losing access to drinking water, and rising sea levels, the study concluded.

The findings were published by the UN’s Environment Program (Unep). Unep chief Achim Steiner said the report showed that time was running out for political leaders to reach a global agreement on curbing emissions.

Mr Steiner made his call for action at the launch of the UN Global Outlook for Ice and Snow report, which was being held in Tromso, Norway.

“The report underlines that the fate of the world’s snowy and icy places in a climatically challenged world should be cause for concern in every ministry, boardroom and living room across the world,” he said.

BUSH ODD MAN OUT OVER CLIMATE AT G8

George W. Bush Sunday night appeared likely to split the world’s eight richest nations on the eve of their summit, despite a last-ditch intervention by Tony Blair, the British prime minister, over global warming.

Climate change will dominate what looks like being a tense three-day summit of the Group of Eight leading industrial economies beginning on Wednesday as Germany, present chairman of the club, and the US squabble over how to tackle rising greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr Blair, speaking in Berlin on Sunday before meeting Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, said the summit should set goals for reducing carbon emissions, pledge to establish a global carbon market and commit to the United Nations-led Kyoto process on climate.

CO2 EMISSIONS FROM FOSSIL FUELS INCREASING AT THREE TIMES THE EXPECTED RATE

Posted in Global Warming, Health Watch, Toxic Living on May 22nd, 2007

TREND INDICATES A REVERSAL OF A MOVE TOWARD GREATER ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND AWAY FROM CARBON-BASED FUELS

gaspump.jpg Instead of slowing down, worldwide carbon-dioxide levels have taken a sudden and alarming jump since the year 2000, an international team of scientists reported Monday.

CO2 emissions from fossil fuels – mostly coal, oil and gas – are increasing at three times the rate experienced in the 1990s, they said.

The rapid acceleration could make the battle against global warming even more difficult than it already appears.

Instead of rising by 1.1 percent a year, as in the previous decade, emissions grew by an average of 3.1 percent a year from 2000 to 2004, the latest year for which global figures are available, the scientists reported in this week’s issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Despite the scientific consensus that carbon emissions are affecting the world’s climate, we are not seeing evidence of progress in managing those emissions,” said Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology in Stanford, Calif., a co-author of the report.

STUDY: WOMEN SUFFER FROM ALCOHOLISM SOONER

Posted in Health Watch, Toxic Living on April 24th, 2007

MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO LIVER, HEART AND OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR CONSEQUENCES THAN MEN

prohibition.jpg Alcohol abuse damages women’s brains and other organs more rapidly than men’s, according to a study released Monday.

Women suffered from alcoholism sooner and while drinking smaller quantities than men, according to authors of the study published in the May issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Researchers gave 78 male and 24 female Russian alcoholics aged 18-40 a battery of tests of their mental functions after four weeks’ abstinence as well as a control group of 68 men and women who were not alcoholics.

The female alcoholics did worse on tests of visual memory, reasoning and problem-solving than their male counterparts.

TOO MUCH CATTLE, NOT ENOUGH EARTH

Posted in Global Warming, Health Watch, News Brief, Toxic Living on April 20th, 2007

COW EMISSIONS MORE DANGEROUS TO PLANET THAN CAR EXHAUST

cowsbig1.jpg A United Nations report has identified the world’s rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.

The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock’s Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world’s 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.
