This is the second time in as many months that the company has had to recall product. Last months recall is blamed for at least 49 cases of E. coli.

NEWS WATCH! BUSHIES TAILOR SCIENCE TO POLICY

Posted in Administrative Arrogance, Eco Thugs, Global Warming, Government Shenanigans, Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Toxic Living on April 24th, 2008

NEARLY 900 EPA SCIENTISTS REPORT EXPERIENCING “SIGNIFICANT ADMINISTRATION MANIPULATION” OF THEIR FINDINGS

bush_dunce2.jpgNearly 900 of our nation’s best and brightest scientists and climatologists working for the Environmental Protection Agency have reported experiencing firsthand meddling by Bush administration political operatives as the Bush flunkies fought to make the scientist’s findings fit administration policy.

This is according to a report issued earlier today by the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit environmental organization.

While this latest data is not particularly surprising, the sad thing is that these findings are in keeping with what was found in other government agencies.

Per the report, nearly 900 of the aforementioned scientists claim to have “personally experienced at least one instance of political interference in the last five years”, while 394 scientists reported experiencing “frequent or occasional statements by EPA officials that misrepresent scientists’ findings.”

But the bad news does not end there. An additional fifth, or 285, reported “selective or incomplete use of their data to justify a ‘specific regulatory outcome’”.

As might be expected, an EPA spokesman, Jonathan Shradar, denied all allegations.

VATICAN UPDATES ITS THOU-SHALT-NOT LIST

Posted in News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Will Wonders Never Cease Department on March 17th, 2008

POLLUTION, MIND-DAMAGING DRUGS, GENETIC EXPERIMENTS AND SOCIAL INJUSTICE TAKE OVER FOR LUST, GLUTTONY AND GREED

popeshouse.JPGIn an attempt to prove that they are not totally out of touch with modern life, the Vatican recently updated its list of mans most grievous offenses.

Much to our surprise here at Libsearthwatch.com, pollution makes the list this time around, as does mind damaging drugs (a no-brainer), genetic experiments (sadly this more than likely includes stem cell research as well as the more futuristic cloning), and social injustice, which the pope and his henchmen use as shorthand when referring to the imbalance between the rich and the poor.

Gone from the new list are the old standbys lust, gluttony and greed. Now whether this means that the Vatican has acknowledged that the ship has sailed where these vices are concerned and has moved on to fresher fields afar, is open to discussion in locales more theological than this.

In the interim, Kudos to Pope Benedict and his team for any effort, no matter how small or insignificant, to modernize this moribund institution.

Kudos also for moving to convert Vatican buildings to solar energy, and for installing photovoltaic cells on the roof of the auditorium where religious pilgrims’ gather for meet and greets with the pontiff.

SURVEY: MOST NON-CHURCHGOERS BELIEVE IN A HIGHER POWER

Posted in News Brief, Public Service Announcement on January 9th, 2008

SIX IN TEN SAY THE GOD OF THE BIBLE IS NO DIFFERENT FROM THE GODS OR SPIRITUAL BEINGS DEPICTED BY THE OTHER WORLD RELIGIONS

rapturew1.jpgAmerican churches, specifically the Christian church, are on the decline with many Americans considering the congregations a hot bed for hypocrites.

In a recent survey conducted by the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, a stunning 22% of Americans identified themselves as non-churchgoers, a five-percentage point increase since the question was last asked in 2004.

Of this number, 72% believe that a higher or supreme being, actually exists, though 61% say the God of the Bible is “no different from the gods or spiritual beings depicted the other world religions including: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. ” This is in spite of the fact that Buddhist philosophy has no god and Hindus worship many.

Moreover, 86% of those who do not go to church claim that they can have a “good relationship with God without belonging to a church.”

On a less positive note, 72% of the non-churchgoers believe that organized religion is “full of hypocrites,” with 44% agreeing with the statement “Christians get on my nerves.”

Additionally, 79% say “Christianity today is more about organized religion than loving God and loving people,” though 71% agreed that “believing in Jesus makes a positive difference in a person’s life.”

Of the unchurched 89% have at least one close friend who is Christian, and that 78% admit that they would “be willing to listen” to someone tell “what he or she believed about Christianity.”

NEW RESEARCH RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LONG-TERM EFFECTIVENESS OF ADHD DRUGS

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement on November 13th, 2007

WHILE RITALIN AND CONCERTA CAN WORK WELL IN THE SHORT TERM, OVER A THREE-YEAR PERIOD THEY BROUGHT ABOUT NO DEMONSTRABLE IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOR. THEY ALSO FOUND THE DRUGS COULD STUNT GROWTH.

250px-High_school_students2.jpgA team of American scientists conducting the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD (MTA) has found that while drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta can work well in the short term, over a three-year period they brought about no demonstrable improvement in children’s behaviour. They also found the drugs could stunt growth.

The research, which will be broadcast on the BBC Panorama programme tonight, shows that GPs in the UK prescribed ADHD drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta to around 55,000 children last year – at a cost of £28m to the NHS.

STUDY: ACNE CURE MAY RAISE SUICIDE RISK

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement on November 13th, 2007

ROACCUTANE, A DRUG USED TO TREAT THOSE SUFFERING FROM SEVERE ACNE COULD CAUSE SEVERE DEPRESSION AND EVEN LEAD TO SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH

2007-08-20-painpills.jpg Roaccutane, appears to interfere with the brain’s use of serotonin — the feel-good hormone — a study published today found.

In the United Kingdom 26 patients taking the drug have committed suicide. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency [MHRA] also recorded 19 attempted suicides, and 31 patients considering suicide, among those taking Roaccutane.

In the study published in the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine today, researchers at the University of Bath found that the drug, also known as isotretinoin, could disrupt the way serotonin carries signals from one part of the brain to another.

SIERRA CLUB WARNS THAT CALIFORNIA BOUND FEMA MOBILE HOMES COULD HAVE DANGEROUS LEVELS OF FORMALDEHYDE

Posted in Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Toxic Living on November 8th, 2007

A KNOWN CARCINOGEN, FORMALDEHYDE CAN CAUSE AN ARRAY OF UPPER RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS, AND TRIGGER ASTHMA AND BREATHING PROBLEMS, PARTICULARLY IN THE ELDERLY AND YOUNG CHILDREN

fire.jpg FEMA claims that its mobile homes are safe, but concedes it has not tested these units, which were manufactured with materials similar to those in the toxic RV trailers.

But Sierra Club says random tests of FEMA mobile homes found at least three had formaldehyde levels over the Environmental Protection Agency limit of .10 parts per million.

Previous Sierra Club testing showed that 83 percent of FEMA homes tested in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama had levels of formaldehyde above the recommended limit.

Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical most often used for embalming, but it is also commonly used as a glue in building materials, like particle board for cabinets in mobile homes. It can “out-gas,” or leak into the air, under hot, humid conditions.

PARENTS ALERT! RECALL ISSUED FOR CHINESE MADE “AQUADOTS”

Posted in Corporate Greed, Corporate Polluters, Health Watch, News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Toxic Toys on November 8th, 2007

SCIENTISTS HAVE ESTABLISHED THAT IF INGESTED, TOY CAN INDUCE UNCONSCIOUSNESS, SEIZURES, DROWSINESS, COMA AND DEATH

aquadots_071108300w.jpgI guess I can’t say that this surprises me all that much. Disappoints me, yes, but doesn’t surprise me.

Month’s back when the first of the toy recalls was announced; I commented in these pages that it was probably the tip of a very large iceberg. Sadly, this is one of the times that I was dead-on in my predictions.

The culpability for this latest instance, and for all of the instances, should fall evenly on both the company marketing the product, and on the company contracted to do the work. But as we have seen in previous instances, usually it is the Chinese manufacturer taking most of the heat for product failures.

Granted, regular testing should be a part of every step of the manufacturing process. Apparently it is not. Now whether this is a cost saving measure, or just something that is not yet done in the Chinese manufacturing culture is unknown, though I would be willing to venture a guess that it’s a matter of dollars and sense. Afterall, the Chinese manufacturing market only exists and has grown to its present size because of the cost savings involved.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the company issuing the product to test the Chinese factory’s output before placing the product on store shelves. Apparently this is not done all that often either. If it were, Aquadots and the scores of other products recalled would never have been distributed in the first place.

What this latest recall and the ones that have gone before will mean to the toy industry this holiday season is anyone’s guess. My only hope is that the industry comes up with an environmentally sound way of disposing of these items. My fear is that many of them will make their way to the discount stores and ultimately in to the hands of unsuspecting parents and children. This would be a tragedy.

The media needs to focus more on this aspect of the story.

TOYS LINKED TO A DATE-RAPE DRUG RECALLED

China-made beads for kids metabolize into GHB when ingested

Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy sold by Australia-based Moose Enterprises, are beads that can be arranged into designs and fused when sprayed with water.

The toy was pulled from shelves in North American and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into the so-called date rape drug when eaten.

Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

Scientists say a chemical coating on the beads can metabolize into the drug gamma hydroxy butyrate. When eaten, the compound — made from common and easily available ingredients — can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

REPORT: EXCESS BODY FAT AND POOR FOOD CHOICES INCREASE THE RISK OF CANCER

Posted in Health Watch, Healthy Food, News Brief, Public Service Announcement, Toxic Food on October 31st, 2007

AVOIDING PROCESSED MEATS, LIMITING CONSUMPTION OF RED MEAT AND ALCOHOL, AND SHEDDING EXCESS WEIGHT SEEN AS PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

obesity.jpg Halloween is the time of the year when I, like many of my baby boomer generation, tend to indulge a little too much in the time honored tradition of stuffing oneself silly with candy.

But I am one of the lucky ones. For me, candy is but a sometimes indulgence and not a full-blown addiction, as it is for many. The periods of my abuse are usually limited to Halloween and the occasional Easter Sunday, give or take a day or two in either direction. Usually, I have had my fill right about the time that the first candy-related zit pops out craving attention on my otherwise zit-free face; usually somewhere between day two and day three.

So there I was early yesterday morning, still in the throes of my seasonal addiction when the word broke on MSNBC that a major, new medical study had been released ascertaining that bad lifestyle decisions and excess body fat were the cause of at least six of the most common forms of cancer.

To say that this was a buzz-kill is an understatement. Complicating matters was the method of delivery. The knowledge that many of the foods that I enjoy, and had enjoyed for much of my life, could be killing me was bad enough. Making matters worse was that it was being delivered over and over again all morning long by MSNBC’s staple of pert, size zero anchorwomen.

There is something sinister when attractive, rail-thin, people speak of dieting and personal sacrifice, even if it is for health reasons. For some reason, it just doesn’t ring true. Perhaps it is the perverse smugness in their tone, one that is not there when they are covering either the war in Iraq, or the latest sex scandal to hit the beltway.

But back to the report….

Well, the body fat issue is a no-brainier. Just look around you, Americans are too damn big and from the look of it getting even bigger. On the whole, this is the result of society making crappy food choices. But we are not entirely to blame for this. Most of us do not know any better, never having been exposed to the knowledge of what to eat for optimum health. Many of us, myself included, don’t even no how to shop, let alone what we should eat or not eat. Sadly, this comes from having been born in a time when packaged food reigned supreme and had successfully worked its way onto nearly every dinner table in America, the consequences of which, apparently we are suffering today.

Now the blame for a large part of this must go to the corporations, to the big multi-nationals that produce this crappy food. But ultimately, the responsibility falls to each of us for what we put in out body. Similarly, it will fall to each of us to figure out how we will shed this excess body fat.

The report recommends exercise, thirty –to- sixty minutes a day of walking, though how many of us have that kind of time in our schedules to devote to this is uncertain. But I guess, considering the alternative, we will figure out a way to find the time.

Moving on, the report also cites certain lifestyle issues as contributing to the growth of cancer in the United States, specifically poor quality foods, fast foods, alcohol and tobacco.

Among those foods, which we are being encouraged to eliminate entirely from our diet, are packaged, processed meat products, essentially meats that have been cured, smoked, salted or chemically preserved. Included on this list are hotdogs, bacon, sausages, and cold cuts. Also no-no’s, according to the report, are sugary sodas, fast foods, and processed foods that are either low in fiber or high in sugar or fat. Candy, unfortunately, falls on this list as does virtually every other man made treat.

The report also urges cutting back on the amounts of red meat and alcohol consumed. The consensus among the various experts on MSNBC yesterday morning was that red meat should not be eaten more than two or three times a week, and then it’s portions should be no larger than the size of the palm of your hand up to the first knuckle. Roughly speaking, three to four ounces per meal is about the maximum, which anyone should consume, though the report noted that vegetarians were least likely to catch any of the major diseases including, some forms of cancer. This flies in the face of American dietary tradition, where steaks are usually only served in twelve ounce or larger slabs.

Interestingly enough, none of MSNBC’s stream of talking heads addressed the alcohol component of the report, so I have nothing to share with you here, other than what is in the attached posting.

I guess that hit just too close to home.

EXCESS BODY FAT IS LINKED TO CANCERS OF THE ESOPHAGUS, PANCREAS, COLON, RECTUM, ENDOMETRIUM, KIDNEY, AND BREAST CANCER IN POST-MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Excess body fat increases an individual’s risk for six types of cancer, according to a report to be released today by two leading cancer research groups, which reviewed more than 7,000 studies on the topic published worldwide.
