COMMENTARY: ADVERTISERS WITH A CONSCIENCE

Posted in Conscious Media, Miscellaneous, Sustainable Business on May 30th, 2006

rolling_stone_front.jpg Congratulations to BMW of North America for their new Let’s Make Room For Mother Nature ad campaign as featured in the recent Rolling Stone Magazine 1000th issue anniversary edition.

What makes this ad campaign for the popular Mini unique is that the sales pitch, simple and elegant, occupies less that one third of the full page purchased.

The balance of the space BMW of North America donated to the Nature Conservancy and for their slogan, saving the last great places on earth.

Hopefully, more advertisers will jump on to this bandwagon and allow earth friendly causes to share their high priced advertising space.

ON MOTHER’S DAY, NOTHING SAYS “I LOVE YOU” LIKE AN ARMFUL OF PESTICIDES

Posted in Toxin Alert! on May 12th, 2006

flowers.jpg Shortly after Jean Harper began working as a plant care technician for a Richmond, Ind., rose grower, a supervisor handed her a half-gallon plastic jug of concentrate. She poured the liquid into the tank while the supervisor added water, creating the frothy mixture that would be sprayed on roses in the greenhouses. Out of idle curiosity, she relates in her new memoir Rose City, she read the label on the jug.

The label said Triforine, accompanied by a skull and crossbones and the all-capitalized warning, DANGER! IRREVERSIBLE EYE DAMAGE! WILL CAUSE BLINDNESS! CORROSIVE!

IS ETHANOL INDUSTRY CHANGING THE ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE OF RURAL AMERICA?

Posted in Miscellaneous on May 9th, 2006

ethanol2.jpeg The burgeoning ethanol industry is changing the economic landscape of rural America, as companies pour billions of dollars into production plants in a race to meet demand and ease America’s addiction to gasoline.

Ethanol backers foresee vast vistas of corn fields churning out feedstock for the clean burning fuel additive running millions of cars in the United States, the world’s largest consumer of energy.

“Ethanol is a tremendous economic engine for rural communities, it results in good paying jobs. You hear stories about opening up new gas stations and businesses taking off the boards from windows on main street,” said Matt Hartwig of Renewable Fuels Association.

He said the industry helped create more than 153,000 jobs last year, boosting U.S household income by $5.7 billion.

ECOTOURISM: IS IT ALL THAT IT SEEMS?

Posted in Cool Products, Miscellaneous, Sustainable Business on May 9th, 2006

rainforest-napo.jpg You’re planning a vacation to a remote corner of the world, to see breathtaking scenery and wildlife. You want to take in as much as possible with minimal impact. And you want your money to go toward helping local communities continue to protect their natural resources.

The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), an international nonprofit, “promotes responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” That’s ecotourism in a nutshell – in a protected rainforest in Brazil, for example, or a wildlife reserve in South Africa. So what could be wrong with this?

NEWS FLASH: CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM’S LARRY DAVID AWARDS PRIUS TO WINNER OF GLOBAL WARMING AWARENESS CONTEST

Posted in Alternative Fuel Vehicles, Eco -Chic, Eco Warriors on May 9th, 2006

Larrydavid.jpg Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld fame put his Toyota Prius where his mouth is – giving away the hybrid car in a contest aimed at increasing awareness of global warming.

David and his wife, Laurie, an environmental activist, surprised a class Wednesday at the University of California, Los Angeles, to award the car to Erick Tarula, a medical student at the school. The couple also served as guest lecturers.

Tarula, 24, of Azusa, California, was among those who registered for the year-long Virtual March to Stop Global Warming, an online petition organized by Stop Global Warming. The group was co-founded by Laurie David to spur politicians to act on the issue.

COMMENTARY: DISSENSION IN THE RANKS

CORPORATE FAT CATS REVOLT AGAINST BUSH GLOBAL WARMING STANCE

globalwarming.jpg More and more members of America’s Corporate elite have seen the future and it scares the hell out of them, so much so that they are now willing to get serious about Global Warming, and to use their positions to effect change.

Among the courageous ones are companies including General Electric Co. and Duke Energy Corp, both of whom have come out in support of national limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions, two factors that scientists say contribute to global warming.

Joining them in this battle are key Republican members of Congress including: Representative Bob Inglis of South Carolina; Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico, the chairman of the chamber’s Energy Committee; Senator Mike DeWine of Ohio; Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Representative Jim Leach of Iowa.

Now whether this new found environmental consciousness is heartfelt or an attempt to placate fundamentalist Christians, recent converts to environmentalism, themselves, is unknown. What is know is that in recent months, many fundamentalists have expressed dissatisfaction with the Republican Party, rightly feeling that they had been abandoned after delivering the numbers at the polls in recent elections.

What is also known is that this pro environment position, regardless of its reason, places these politicians in diametric opposition to the administration, which with it’s “end times” mentality refuses to support any environmental regulations and has gone out of its way to gut those already in place.

Supporting the administration in this task is the Republican controlled House Committee on Resources, which as recently as last week, in a taxpayer funded website, referred to potential environmental calamities as “myths”.

What strikes me as most telling, however, about this website, ironically named EARTH DAY and targeted to coincide with the national day of environmental observance, is that nowhere in it’s slickly produced pages is Global Warming mentioned.

What the site does, and quite effectively I might add, is attempt to discredit the environmental movement by attacking specific organizations and individuals who would have Americans believe anything is wrong with the environment in the United States, labeling said persons / groups as extremists.

While the source of this website’s data is not disclosed, the black hand of oil industry lobbyists is ever present.

What is known is that the issue will most definitely figure in the upcoming midterm and presidential elections.

One politician being mentioned as a candidate for President who has made his position on the environment crystal clear is Senator John McCain of Arizona, the co-sponsor of a bill, which would limit carbon emissions.

While McCain’s bill has failed to pass the Senate in two previous outings and lacks support in the House of Representatives, many in the know believe that it will pass in the not too distant future.

Though not a candidate, former Vice President Al Gore, a long time environmental supporter and author of a key book on the subject, “Earth In The Balance”, believes that it may fall to the Democrats to push the political consensus “across the tipping point”.

Next month, Paramount Pictures is scheduled to release “An Inconvenient Truth,” a documentary about Gore’s decades long campaign to convince Americans to take global warming seriously.

But, unfortunately, it will take more than a documentary and a handful of conscious politicians to convince many of their Republican counterparts, fat on the largesse of polluting corporations, to see the light and change their stance.

Which means that it is up to you and I the voter to effect change. If the politicians will not change, then it is our duty to change the politicians.

Your life and your health depend on it.

THE NEXT GREEN REVOLUTION

Posted in Miscellaneous on May 9th, 2006

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS LEADING ENVIRONMENTALISM OUT OF THE ANTI-BUSINESS, ANTI-CONSUMER WILDERNESS.

altfuelcars.jpg For decades, environmentalists have warned of a coming climate crisis. Their alarms went unheeded, and last year we reaped an early harvest: a singularly ferocious hurricane season, record snowfall in New England, the worst-ever wildfires in Alaska, arctic glaciers at their lowest ebb in millennia, catastrophic drought in Brazil, devastating floods in India – portents of global warming’s destructive potential.

Green-minded activists failed to move the broader public not because they were wrong about the problems, but because the solutions they offered were unappealing to most people. They called for tightening belts and curbing appetites, turning down the thermostat and living lower on the food chain.

COMMENTARY: CRUDE PREDICTED TO HIT $100.00 A BARREL

Posted in Miscellaneous on May 9th, 2006

ADMINISTRATION PREDICTS THREE MORE YEARS OF RAPE AT THE PUMP

Senior Wall Street analysts, citing the growing international crisis over Iran’s nuclear program, the ethnic and tribal disputes in Nigeria, and the worsening situation in Iraq, are predicting that the price of crude could surpass the $100.00 per barrel mark in the not too distant future. This, according to Adam Sieminski, the senior energy economist at Deutsche Bank, New York.

What that means for you and I at the pump is still unknown, but I would bet that we will be paying between $4.00 and $5.00 per gallon, perhaps as soon as this summer. One thing is certain, such an increase will devastate the in-country tourism industry as higher fuel prices would force many families to stay closer to home rather than set out on their traditional summer trek.

But, the news in Sieminski’s report is not all doom and gloom. The analyst believes that the triple digit prices would only be temporary, and that prices would eventually fall to between $30 and $60 per barrel as increased infrastructure investment brings new production and refining capacity on line. But as to when that would be, the analyst is not saying.

Who is talking, however, is Bush administration Energy Secretary, Samuel Bodman, who in an appearance on yesterday’s “Meet the Press”, predicted that the inflated gas prices could persist up to three more years.

For his part, Bodman blamed “increased demand from China and India, reduced refining capacity after Hurricane Katrina, and inadequate planning for shifts to cleaner fuels like ethanol and low-sulfur diesel”, for causing the rising prices. He did, however, opine that the shortfall “was a sign of a stronger economy under President Bush.”

How he drew that conclusion, and not the more relevant one that George Bush’s inept foreign policy is the cause of most of the situations being cited for the increase price of crude, is beyond me. I guess it’s the Kool Aide.

Not to be outdone by the experts, the smirking chimp, himself, George Dubya Bush called for another one of his famous investigations that go nowhere, this one into possible price manipulation by the major oil companies.

To think that he would do anything, if there was anything he could do, that would jeopardize Big Oil’s profits, no matter how illegally they were obtained, is unrealistic.

Equally unrealistic is thinking that this rape at the pump was not part of Cheney’s famous energy plan from day one. You know the plan, the one that he and the oil guys drew up in secret early in the first term, the very same one that was later labeled as classified.

Once again, America is screwed by the Republicans. If this is not a reason to deny them public office for the next fifty years or so, I don’t know what is.

GLOBAL WARMING CITED IN WIND SHIFT

Posted in Global Warming on May 3rd, 2006

globalwarming5.gif

An important wind circulation pattern over the Pacific Ocean has begun to weaken because of global warming caused by human activity, something that could alter climate and the marine food chain in the region, new research suggests.

It’s not clear what climate changes might arise in the area or possibly beyond, but the long-term effect might resemble some aspects of an El Nino event, a study author said.

El Ninos boost rainfall in the southern United States and western South America and bring dry weather or even drought to Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere in the western Pacific.

As for the Pacific food chain near the equator, the slowdown might reduce populations of tiny plants and animals up through the fish that eat them, because of reduced nutrition welling up from the deep, said the author, Gabriel Vecchi.

Vecchi, a visiting scientist at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab in Princeton, N.J., and colleagues present their results in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature.

SMALLER VEHICLES, BIGGER SALES

Posted in Alternative Fuel Vehicles on May 2nd, 2006

05fordescapehybridfront.jpg The April auto sales figures are out for most companies, and the numbers indicate that consumers are buying with rising gas prices in mind.

Ford and Mazda both said truck sales were down 15 percent, while both had increases in passenger vehicles sales. Overall Ford lost 7 percent compared to the prior April, but the company gleefully stated that sales of its Escape and Mariner hybrids were up 115 percent over March.

DaimlerChrysler sales shrank by 6 percent, while the twin Japanese makers of hybrids (Honda and Toyota) both saw sales rise (by 6 and 8.5 percent respectively). Toyota said more than 1/3 of its Highlander sales came from hybrids.

Mitsubishi had the best month of all, increasing sales by 17.5 over April 2005.
